Mirjam Cvetič

Mirjam Cvetič received her bachelor's and master's degrees in physics from the University of Ljubljana, and her doctorate from the University of Maryland in 1984. She was a postdoctoral researcher at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center and joined the faculty of the University of Pennsylvania in 1987. In 2003, she was awarded the Fay R. and Eugene L. Langberg Professorship, and since 2015 she has been additionally employed in the Department of Mathematics. She is a research professor at the Center for Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics of the University of Maribor and a permanent visiting professor at the University of Ljubljana.

She is a member of the American Physical Society, received the Physics Distinguished Alumni Award from the University of Maryland, and was awarded the prestigious Friedrich von Siemens Research Award from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. In 2023, she was elected a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Mirjam Cvetič is regarded as an outstanding expert in fundamental issues relating to string theory and its consequences for fundamental particle physics. Her efforts encompass broad thrusts in fundamental theory, ranging from fundamental aspects of gravitational physics (fundamental work on black holes in String Theory) and work at the interface with differential and algebraic geometry (discovery of new metrics with special holonomy), to leading efforts in constructions of String Theory solutions and the study of their physics implications (recent Standard Model constructions with the exact spectrum of quarks and leptons in the geometric phase of String Theory, the so-called F-theory).
